My name is Sam and like several other 25 year old women out there, I have a fashion blog. Every day I focus on fashion that is affordable, stylish, but where I like to think I am a little bit different - is that I only focus on fashion that is strictly manufactured in Canada.
As a young girl I was always on the hunt for unique fashion and now at a mature age of 25 I completely understand our responsibility for shopping local. There are several reasons to shop local, supporting your community, supporting these companies the provide jobs to our economy, understanding a responsible work environment and quality control..The list goes on and on. That is why it is so important that we take time to shop with these Canadian designers that bring so much more than “fashion” to the game.
I once was one of them, struggling to survive and remain inspired while being eaten up by fast fashion left, right and center. In Fall 2011 after 4 years of serious attempts at getting my clothing line off of the ground, I decided to halt and take a break. In the months leading up to this break, I began to realize that even my incredibly successful friends who have been happily running their businesses for years in Canada - were nowhere to be seen in the spotlight. It began to make me angry that these Designers who manufacture hundreds to thousands of pieces each year in Canada are nowhere to be seen and hardly get the praise that they deserve. My design spirit began to break, as I realized that gracing the cover of my favourite magazines was probably never going to happen nor was the industry ever going to give me what I need. Don’t get me wrong, there is some support for some designers and a lot of hooplah over “new exciting talent” but there isn’t much for these companies that contribute to our economy and have been in business for YEARS. With all of this in my gut, I said goodbye to my clothing line and decided to jump-in full force into a world of support for strictly - Made in Canada - fashion. Too many people focus on filling the quota of Canadian-content when I want to live in a world where its natural and easy to choose Canadian-made. In January 2012, I set up my husband’s Camera, tri-pod and our gray backdrop and got to work.
As of today I have been wearing - Made in Canada - fashion, Monday to Friday for 52 weeks. The average price range of the garments shown during the 52 weeks has been $20- $250 with the exemption of bridal week in which I reviewed - Made in Canada - wedding dresses that retailed for $1000+. Shopping local can be affordable, there are so many options that are comparable, if not less expensive than some of your cookie-cutter-Mall-options. Canadian designers know that you are making the investment when choosing their garment, because of this they put so much thought into the versatility and quality of the garment, ensuring the highest wear ability. In the 52 weeks that I have blogged, I have met the most incredible designers and store owners right across the country. They have the utmost respect for their employees and are always excited to invest and look for opportunity in their fellow Canadians businesses. This is one of the many reasons why supporting local is important, I feel the energy is contagious and am hopeful of us all getting on board.
This website has changed my out-look on everything, as a young professional myself, I once too was a slave to the fast and easy fashion. I really thought that another cheap tank top was going to change my life or wardrobe. I have stopped this and put forward a smarter way of thinking, I am now focused on saving for these investment pieces because I am aware that spending $50 on a Canadian-made t shirt will go a lot longer than spending $50 on 5 t-shirts that will be thrown to the bottom of the closet after a wash or two or the trend fades. Not only I, but I believe I have slowly gotten my family and friends on board with this mentality as this way of life is imperative to our survival! My website and mission has become a full fledged fire as I am solely dedicated to the success of these designers manufacturing in Canada and I encourage you to do the same. (or at least follow along with my website!) :)
The black and red bag is called the Indulgent, and it is made from leather and silk! RIMANCHIK ensures that this piece will grab all the attention, as it is a masterpiece to look at and a pleasure to use! This bag relies on the over-sized rings and gravity for closure, which is great for easy access to those hundreds of things we pour into our purse. Not to worry, there is also a built in addition drawstring closure for extra safety. The Chinese Silk brocade is so beautiful and soft - its a brilliant mix of textures. There is tons of pockets for all your chap sticks and keys, this bag is for the practical gal! It retails for $260. Well it is sadly the last day of RIMANCHIK week! Some last details on this Amazzzing company… RIMANCHIK products are sold right across Canada at about 18 stores, as well through the MAJOR shows like the Toronto One of A Kind and the Vancouver Circle of Craft! We end today with the Sasha leather wrap belt in your basic black. However this belt is anything but basic, it truly adds a sassy sense to any style! Most importantly flattering your figure! Retails for $120.
Today I am decked out in lime! Wearing my Paper People Clothing scarf dress, I am set for the Spring. The watch seen below, is called the Deco and it retails for $120. Functional and minimalist, this Art Deco watch consists of a sleek dial with the hour divisions etched on the steel, and a semi-dial below, which houses the second hand. The interlocking rings are echoed in the strap by an attractive leather band that circles the wrist twice, I love the way this watch mixes bold color with a minimalistic feel. I am wearing the Mary-Jane belt, truly a masterpiece in design! It took me a minute to figure out, how to wear it - but once I had it on, I did not want to take it off! The little gorgeous bag is called the Minnie, and this is one of the team RIMANCHIK’s favourite styles for the Spring! Naturally the intricate details are stunning and the functionality of this bag is supreme! This has to be one of the cutest bags ever, however maintains a classic maturity to it too!
RIMANCHIK items are designed and manufactured in Montreal at their in-house studio. Founded in 2003, to this day the team at RIMANCHIK feel passionately about production in Canada, and had this to say about why Canadian-made is so important:
We have seen a huge decline in manufacturing in Canada and with it a loss of expertise and knowledge. However, the local creative impulse is present, dynamic and embodies a great deal of potential. Without any support, all of this talent would be forced to leave.
Love how the Melody bag looks when being carried! Along with my Canadian-made Mandala Design dress I have paired the RIMANCHIK Ella hip belt. I have worn it up high on my waist, as you can have a lot of fun with the versatility of this style. This Montreal label creates functional fashion that is more like works of art, they fuse edge and femininity while bringing attention to where you want it most - no need for jewellery as their accessories command attention with their unique design! Along with my Flare cuff in red, RIMANCHIK spruces up this dress beautifully in three easy steps! The Melody bag retails for $230, the gorgeous Ella belt retails for $90 and the Lips Cuffs retail for $30.
